ICU at a glance
The Institute for the University Co-operation (ICU) is an Italian NGO working in development co-operation. ICU’s fundamental driver is the attention to human dignity: each person is considered as an individual capable of learning and shaping her/his future. Our Mission is to promote self-development in order to assure beneficiaries’ positive impact on their communities. In other words, we help people doing better what they already do. We promote capacity building by focusing on technology, expertise and capabilities transfer. ICU’s main sectors of intervention are education and professional training, hygiene and sanitation, agriculture and rural development, renewable energy, fishery, social entrepreneurship, fair trade market, social development, emergency and relief, waste and water management; we are currently running projects in the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America. Our global sponsors include the European Union, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNIDO, the Opec Fund for International Development plus several institutions, governments, foundations and private citizens.
Why ICU?
We will give you the opportunity
– to make the difference
– to work for people, with people
– to have social impact
– to do something different
– to “get your hands dirty”
– to go from planning to execution
– to be exposed in the field
Background and purpose of the position
The project “PV-Integrated Drip Irrigation Systems in Jordan and Lebanon” supports the deployment of a Clean Energy Solution (CES), which is a single package for small to medium farmers composed by a photovoltaic (PV) unit and an efficient fertigation system developed and tested in 10 pilot farms and included in the catalogues of the two renewable energy (RE) partner companies, namely Nur Solar Systems (Jordan) and Solaris Green Energy (Lebanon), that will also run the business. The package also includes support to farmers in accessing credit opportunities, based on already existing programs of financial institutions. The project will train both partner staff and extension agents of the Ministry of Agriculture to make them able to offer a valid support to farmers in preparing credit requests. The aim of the project is to develop a sustainable business model for different customer segments in order to facilitate the access to the technology.
ICU team started a market analysis research and according with the situation and advancement of the project, we will need some help during the summer stage period to:
1. Conduct an overall assessment of the different stakeholders relevant for the project particularly from government organizations (NCARE), funds (JREEEF) and financial institutes (NMB, ACC).
2. Conduct a survey with farmers across the 2 segments (small to medium, large farmers) to assess the cost saving associated with using CES and associated return on investment.
3. Assess the possibility of integrating financial solutions recommended in the market analysis report (to be provided end of April) into the CES solution.
4. Identify opportunities and challenges for farmers currently using the CES system
5. Identify opportunities/strategies to market existing CES systems (promote field days)
